BIG-BALL’S WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER

Gerhard Duraan, photographer for most of the BIG-BALL cards, won the prestigious Photographer of the Year Award at the Sasol Springbok Media Awards, which recognise excellence in reporting on Springbok Rugby.

Gerhard's excellent portfolio stood out in an extremely strong category - the decider for the Judges was the amazing shot of John Smit reaching for the ball with the tips of his fingers.

"I was one of 12 roving photographers, moving up and down the touchline, looking for something special and different. I decided to move behind the tryline, set up and the next thing I knew, I had the pic. It was meant to be and I was definitely guided by God. There were Aussie players either side of Smit and I snapped the pick-up in the middle of the frame, clear as day." said Gerhard.

Rugby has always been in Gerhard's blood and he coached Port Natal School's 1st team for 12 years before moving into rugby photography full time in 2007. The Player pics are an extremely important part of the BIG-BALL cards and we are fortunate to have someone of Gerhard's talent working with us!
